Backstory
The Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II was a nationwide video game competition held in 1995 by Blockbuster Video, following the success of its inaugural championship in 1994. The tournament was designed to bring competitive gaming into mainstream retail culture, allowing players to compete at participating Blockbuster stores for the opportunity to advance to higher levels of competition.
The championship is particularly notable as an early example of organized competitive gaming in the United States, predating the modern esports industry. It also generated promotional merchandise and memorabilia that have since become collectible among retro gaming enthusiasts.
The qualifying rounds ran from June 14 through July 9, 1995, with international finalists competing in San Francisco on August 21. Players competed on either the Super Nintendo using a special five-minute Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge, or the Sega Genesis using a custom cartridge containing NBA Jam Tournament Edition and Judge Dredd. The tournament attracted more than 300,000 participants worldwide, with finalists competing for $5,000 scholarships.
