Backstory
The 1985 Summer Consumer Electronics Show (SCES), held in Chicago in June, marked a pivotal moment in video game history as Nintendo prepared to introduce its Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) to the American market. Following the North American video game crash of 1983, retailers were skeptical of home gaming consoles, making Nintendo’s efforts particularly challenging. Nintendo showcased the NES with its distinctive gray-and-black design, R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy), the Zapper light gun, and a lineup of games including Super Mario Bros.
The company deliberately marketed the NES as an entertainment system rather than a traditional video game console, hoping to overcome retailers’ reluctance. Although its reception at SCES was lukewarm, Nintendo proceeded with a limited New York launch in October 1985, laying the groundwork for the NES’s nationwide expansion in 1986 and the revival of the American home video game industry.
This shirt was given to press attending. You can find more information about the NES Launch at the VGHF:
